Thrive as a Highly Sensitive Person

How to Thrive as a Highly Sensitive Person

We often don’t recognize the many upsides to being a highly sensitive person. Elaine Aron, PhD, author of The Highly Sensitive Person, describes us as intuitive, creative, imaginative, intelligent, deep thinkers, conscientious, good with animals and children, great listeners, sensitive to the needs of others, empathetic and many more characteristics. The biggest downside was our frequent plummet into overwhelm. It takes intuitive self-care to ensure you thrive and bring out the best in yourself.

When you see the world in Technicolor or 3-D, it’s a lot to take in and process. Our processing skills run deep, so we need more time than most. When we absorb others’ feelings, get bombarded with nightly news full of violence, deal with loud noise and bright lights (think Rock Concert), we start to shut down.

We can’t BE in the world the way we want to be—that’s where listening to our sensitive nature comes in. We can learn to manage our feelings and environment in a way that lifts us up to be the healers, creatives, advisors and thought leaders we were meant to be through meditative and visioning techniques and lifestyle management.

For example, this means when you get home from a hectic day, it’s especially important that you get peaceful. Go for a walk or ride a bike. Take a relaxing bath with Epsom Salts and Baking Soda to de-stress and remove any negative energy. Stretch out and read a book with some soothing music on in the background. Take a nap.

Whatever supportive behavior that brings you back into your body and away from stressful feelings is fine. (By the way, any addictive behavior like consuming too much sugar, carbs or alcohol only makes it worse). If negative or hurtful feelings come up, try journaling and parenting yourself in a positive way.

Being bold today means being a Highly Sensitive Person who knows and honors her/himself, accepting their spiritual purpose on this earth. The more Highly Sensitive People embrace who they are and thrive, the better the world will be for it. A world dominated by violence, corruption, environmental destruction, greed, and other warrior ways needs the balance of soothing energy we bring to it. So, I urge you—Be bold. Be gentle. Be you.
